TRUMAN– The Truman City Council on Tuesday held a preliminary discussion of the 2023 budget. As of now, there is a proposed levy increase of $83,000.

Some bigger items in the budget include $6,000 set aside for the fire truck reserve, about $6,000 for campground equipment, wages for additional office staff, step increases and proceed COLA.

The budget will be approved later this year.

Moving to other maters, the council heard quarterly reports from several departments.

Fire Chief Dave Bentz shared that they hired a new member for the fire department who comes from a fire department in Nicollet and has already undergone the required training.

Bentz said they’ve done 15 runs for the year plus a number of lift assists for the ambulance department. He also said they recently did a house burn and have another one in the works.

Josh Kitzerow of the ambulance department said they also have someone interested in joining them and is willing to take classes in Mankato. The council approved of the new hire contingent on a background check.

He said local calls are up and they’ve also done 55 calls to Fairmont and 12 to Lewisville.

“Covering our neighbors is becoming more of a common thing,” Kitzerow said.

Moving to the matter of the pool, Wayne Wiederhoeft suggested they switch from chlorine pucks to liquid. He said two pumps are needed for the pool and they’re about $600-$800 each but that price could change by next year.

Wiederhoeft said there’s money left in the budget for chemicals from this year so he offered to look into getting the pumps. Council Member Jake Ebert said if there’s leftover money he should look into getting them now.

In other action, the council approved a bid for $28,820 from Beemers Construction for the Fifth Street drainage project.
